Democratic Dialogue

Seems like the commitment to peace by ETA is taking a lot of naysayers by surprise.

Here you have the article about the interview by Basque newspaper Gara with two ETA members:

Basque separatists ETA, in rare interview, appeal for dialogue

Sat May 13, 5:51 AM ET

The Basque separatist group ETA, in a rare interview, declared that democratic debate was the key to peace for the long-restive Spanish region.

Basque daily newspaper Gara, which has traditionally been used by ETA to publicise its demands, said its exclusive interview with the organisation had been translated into Castillian Spanish from the original Basque because of its "journalistic importance" given the current political situation.

It said ETA, which in the past has shunned media interviews, had "answered all the questions that arise from the current political situation".

"(For ETA) the key to the process lies in democratic debate in Euskal Herria (the Basque country)," the paper reported on its website Saturday.

ETA declared a unilateral ceasefire in late March, following a nearly four-decade struggle for an independent Basque homeland in northwestern Spain and southwestern France during which more than 800 people died.

Regarding that last paragraph about the 800, remember that in tree hours fascist Spaniards had Nazi German pilots murdering almost 2000 Basque women and children, and not one of those who took part on or ordered that genocidal attack on Gernika ever saw the inside of a prison cell.
