Celebrating Aberri Eguna

Today we celebrate the Aberri Eguna all over the place in the Basque Country and among the Basques around the world, in Euskal Herria, people goes out to the streets to celebrate their national identity, and they hang Ikurrinas from the balconies and windows in their houses.

The Basque National Day, is always celebrated on Easter Sunday.

The word Aberri 'Fatherland' was coined by the Basque nationalist Sabino Arana in the late 19th century.

The practice of celebrating Aberri Eguna was itself introduced by Arana in his attempt to awake a dormant Basque identity, since then, the day has become and event of considerable importance, and it has always been celebrated except when persecution by Spanish dictatorships has prohibited this.
