Hi. I'm sorry to comment about this here, but I tought you might help me. I'm from Portugal, and I'll be visiting Bilbao shortly. I'm planning to take a day to visit some place close, but haven't decided between Vitória and Gernika. Wich one would you recommend? Thank you.
ReplyDeleteHey, not a problem, you are welcome to ask any questions you want.
ReplyDeleteFor how long are you staying in Bilbo?
Because Gernika is not terribly far and maybe you can go there on a one day tour.
If time is an issue I recommend Gernika.
Except for the arriving and departing days, I will stay 3 complete days in Bilbo. The only scheduled event (if I managed to get tickets) is the Athletic's Uefa cup match. Apart from that I'll be wandering around the city.
ReplyDeleteFrom what I've seen the difference in distance is not much (more 30kms). The only issue about time is how long it will take me to get to Gernika or Vitoria, from Bilbao, by public tranports. Apart from that I don't mind taking a bus at 7 a.m., and returning late at night.
Oh, it is real easy to get from Bilbo to either Vitoria-Gazteiz or to Guernica-Lumo.
ReplyDeleteI'll get you some more info.
And let the Athletic win!
Of course Athletic will win. I'm expecting nothing but that :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the help
J, here you have what Mantxo, a Bilbotarra (who hopes you are rooting for the Athletic) suggested:
ReplyDeleteBilbo to Gernika and to Durango: there are buses and train too. The train from the Atxuri train station
near Bilbo old quarter.
From Gernika you can go to Bermeo by bus (quite near) from there you can walk to Mundaka and see the lovely rivermouth of Urdaibai: amazing!
From Bermeo he can walk to S Juan Gaztelugatxe too, a hermit in a litle peninsula surrounded by sea and at high height. Also amazing.
He can check: http://www.bermeokue.com/
Durango is surrounded by some of the most magnificient mountains: Anboto, etc.

Well, I'm already in Bilbao, and I'm loving it. 2 hours left for the match (managed to get a ticket), it's time to put on my Athletic's scarf and shirt, and head for San Mamés. Thanks for the tips (Blex and Mantxo), but I decided on Vitoria (bought the ticket at Termibus just an hour ago), but the basque coast will be on my places-to-see list. Thanks for all your help.
ReplyDeleteGora Athletic ;)
Hey J, have fun, take bunch of pictures.
