Banned Batasuna admits belittling suffering of victims a mistake
The leader of the outlawed Basque pro-independence party Batasuna has admitted that it was a mistake to belittle the suffering of victims of the armed conflict and to make out that the end result justified all actions.
"We made out that we didn't care about the suffering of others and that the end justified all. This was clearly a mistake,'' Arnaldo Otegi was quoted as saying to the Catalan-language daily Avui in an interview published Monday.
Otegi's party was outlawed in 2003 on grounds that it was part of the armed group ETA, which declared a permanent cease-fire March 22.
The 47-year-old politician is considered a key figure in any future negotiations between ETA and its supporters and the Spanish Government.
Eusko Ikaskuntza and the Basque Studies Library sign agreement
With promotion and diffusion of Basque culture on both continents as the objective, Eusko Ikaskuntza and the Center for Basque Studies, then known as the Basque Studies Program, signed an agreement of cooperation on December 15, 1995.
The amendment signed on May 1, 2006 expanded the original agreement to include the Basque Studies Library, considered the documentary reference for the English-speaking world in everything related to Basque subjects.
Over forty students were honored at the thirty-seventh annual department of Foreign Languages and Literatures foreign language awards ceremony. Until now the department honored not only the exceptional students at UNR, but also area high school students who had received national recognition for their accomplishments in foreign languages at that level.
Andrea Franzoia (Anacabe) and Nathan Piazza were both honored as outstanding First-year Basque Students and Dylan Krenka as outstanding second year student. They were presented certificates of recognition by instructor Kate Camino, and will also receive a $50 award for their efforts.
